✶ Artist Statement
I have a love for Japanese comics because I was touched by a romance story from one of my favorite comic artists, Yū Watase. I directly feel the emotion from the characters while the story is going through, and I love the efforts she has contributed in order to complete a well quality of accomplishment.
I was born in New York and lived in Taiwan from 5 to 15 years old. I have been actively involved in the Chinese and Japanese comic/animation culture for many years aside from my professional education training in University of California at Berkeley. This connection and passion has given me the opportunity to interact with like-minded, tremendously talented people. The other artists I have met in my online community, personally I think we are all related because of our passion on various characters from different comic/animation; we love to share our enthusiasm of drawing, new idea of creating new story from originals, or just simply chatting, just like we have been friends for years. As an online community of maker, internet may be only a virtual world, but at the same time, it is a place where I can view art from the world.
As an artist, I have always been interested in digital illustration and animation. In my work, I mainly focus on stylizing the form of my characters to emphasize their personalities. I accomplish this by not only designing their outfits, but also by exaggerating their movement and gestures. The detailed two dimensional characters are part of a vivid and fluent world, which I develop through careful research, writing, and story boarding to represent their existence.
Even though the digital illustration and animation only exists under the screen that we can’t have any physical interaction with, I still admire the techniques of combining artist drawing skill and digital program together, which I can use for creating my imagined world through online and worldwide.
